Giulio Laura

Artist

Giulio Laura is a maker currently based between Tāmaki Makaurau, New Zealand and Sanremo, Italy where he was born. In an attempt to become an artist, Giulio spends his time creating things and developing a space in which to do this. From the creation of libraries of materials to the collection of broken tools fixed to good enough standards. Home is a laboratory. Giulio is currently working as a lecturer at Whitecliffe school arts where they are also studying in their final year of an MFA.

OpenCo. is an attempt at decentralising creativity and using a team to support the making process. This duality is sometimes a spring board of ideas, other times a collaboration and other times again just a departure for us to start from. This experiment serves as a springboard to the artist to achieve their own but intertwined ideas, interests and modes of production. The artists must assume their own responsibility when it comes to art production and complex. All works remain the artists with a attribution to the think tank or physical help to members of OpenCo.

Mordo Barkley

Artist alias

Mordo Barkley or MB is an early artistic alias created by Sarah W. as an artistic experiment gone stale. Begun as a Facebook page the site stayed alive macerating spam and fake accounts. Giulio Laura at the time had an adolescent rebellion against the information collecting giant and refused to re activate his old FB account. After a few months Giulio discovered that being non contactable was detrimental to social life and picked up the abandoned account as his own.

MB became a way to experiment freely to Giulio, with the added creative and cultural capital (edginess) that using an alias brought to the pretty empty table at the time. This seemingly stupid action of not taking responsibility of your own creations grew old about a decade later.
